Training material of Main Department (HA) VIII

In 1977, the head of Main Department VIII, Major General Albert Schubert, identified a lack of camouflage methods within his service unit. This prompted him to set up a working group to disseminate more widely 'the good practice examples of individual departments'. The training material that forms the core of this file was probably produced in this context.

The extensive photographic documentation provides practical examples of how people and vehicles could be altered, disguised and camouflaged in the field with relatively little effort and within a short period of time. It was intended specifically as a practical guide for Stasi personnel engaged in surveillance of personnel in the three Western Military Liaison Missions (Militärverbindungsmissionen, MVM) – those of the United States, Great Britain and France.
